Montgomery Volunteer Opportunities

  • Alabama State University Archives: This non-profit is charged with the preservation of historically significant items from the events which have shaped the culture of the African American community of today. Volunteers catalog collections, repair books, assist with fundraisers for the Museum.

  • Baptist East and Baptist South Hospitals: have need for persons to serve in waiting rooms, assist with the “Wheel Chair Brigade”, work in the gift shop, and to deliver mail, newspapers and flowers. These hours are counted under the heading of “Community Priorities”.

  • COVID Response: Assist with transportation to and from vaccination sites and help with paperwork.

  • First United Methodist Church Frozen Meals: This is another group which cooks, packages and delivers hot meals to homebound seniors.

  • MACOA Frozen Meals: Volunteers prepare and package frozen meals for distribution.

  • MACOA Mobile Meals: Volunteers carry hot meals, fruit or juice and a newspaper to homebound seniors in the City. Routes consist of ten to fourteen clients who look forward to a friendly face and greeting each weekday.

  • MACOA Welcome Center: Volunteers greet visitors in the MACOA office, answer phone and help with clerical duties.

  • Mad Hatters: Volunteers make warm hats for the neediest of the Meals on Wheels Clients. These hats are included in the annual Christmas Bag Project. Non-perishable food, pet food, and socks are among the other donations distributed during the holidays.

  • Maxwell Thrift Shop: The workers stock shelves, collect donations, price and sell items in the shop. They also keep all of the financial records of the store. Proceeds go to fund scholarships.

  • Medical Outreach Ministries: Volunteers assist with the screening of new patients and help with clerical duties of the office. This facility provides healthcare for those who are unable to pay for services elsewhere. Recently (2016) the organization consisted of five paid employees and about eighty volunteers. This assignment is considered “Economic Opportunity” because those people who are served would be unable to afford treatment at many other facilities.

  • Montgomery Area Food Bank: Help with the packaging of food donations to be distributed to food pantries and shelters.

  • Montgomery Donations Management: Help with fundraisers at local non-profits.

  • Montgomery Disaster Preparation, Response, Recovery: Respond to disasters in the community.

  • Montgomery Companionship: Visit senior in his/her home and assist where needed.

  • Montgomery Respite Care: Provide respite care to a caregiver and a care receiver, either in the home or at a designated location.

  • Montgomery AARP Tax Program: assist with the preparation of individual income taxes during the months of February through April each year. These hours are considered an “Economic Opportunity” for those who have less income than the average taxpayer.

  • Montgomery Veterans and Military Families: Volunteers provide companionship to veterans, serve in honor guards at funerals, clean and maintain monuments, and assist veterans with understanding benefits and assist with outings and activities.

  • Pike Road Frozen Meals: Volunteers prepare, package and freeze meals to be distributed to identified clients in the Pike Road Community; the volunteer also helps distribute meals from the Founders Station Pick up Center.

  • State Department of Archives and History: Work in the gift shop, serve as a docent to school groups, work in the hands-on gallery, catalog collections, provide clerical assistance, do data entry.

  • Supreme Court and State Library: Serve as docents to school children touring the court building and library, assist the librarians, provide clerical assistance.

  • VIPS (Volunteers in Police Service): Provide clerical assistance to the Admin Division and the Planning and Development Divisions, Organize Neighborhood Watch Meetings, Distribute incident reports and other papers to proper recipients, and many other duties
